Well, Christmas is right around the corner and I’m sure a lot of you would like the latest and greatest video game console. But there are so many to choose from now. Which one is the best? I don’t want to bore you with a lot of technical jargon, so I’ll just give you an idea of what each one offers so you can make an educated decision. Below are the three most popular consoles on the market today.

So which one should you buy? That really depends on what kinds of games you like to play. They all offer a wide selection of games and even online multiplayer games.

The Wii is fairly new, being launched in September 14, 2006. The Wii offers more family-oriented, more kid-friendly games. And with the innovative controllers, you don’t just sit there twiddling your joystick. They have Golf, where you actually swing your controller to hit the ball. And Baseball, where one player will “throw” the ball with his controller and the other will bat by swinging the other controller. There are also a lot of other fun titles, like Tennis and Boxing. Plus, the Wii is backward compatible with the GameCube and Nintendo DS. And because of the popularity of the console, there are more and more games being added every day.

The Xbox 360 was released on November 22, 2005, in the United States, Mexico and Canada. A prominent feature of the Xbox 360 is its integrated Xbox Live service that allows players to complete online and download content such as arcade games, game demos, trailers, TV shows, and movies. The Xbox Live service costs about $50 a year. There are a wide variety of games including RPG’s, arcade games, action games, music/dance games, and flight simulation. There are also plenty of E for Everyone rated games, such as Scooby-Doo! Unmasked, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Codename: Kids Next Door, and many others.

The PS3 was first release in Japan on November 11, 2006. Successor to the Playstation 2 and Playstation, it is backward compatible with both units. The PlayStation 3 features a slot-loading 2x speed Blu-ray Disc drive for games, Blu-ray movies, DVDs, CDs, and other optical media. The PS3 seems to be for more hard-core gamers that like shooter games, war games, and RPG fantasies, although I have seen some games rated E for Everyone. These include Hannah Montana, Little Big Planet, Trivial Pursuit, Cars (from the movie Cars), and several sports games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Madden, and others.

Games are not just for kids. Everyone needs to let off some steam once in awhile, or exercise their brain with some strategy games or trivia. Or maybe you just want to get lost in a fantasy and forget about the screwed up world we live in. Whatever you like, games can probably give it to you. Even if you just want to talk to somebody, with online games that allow you to chat with other players, you can become a part of a virtual world without ever leaving your living room.

Though it took time to build its base, by now the Xbox 360 has carved a true, solid audience-heavy niche for itself in the gaming industry. This powerhouse console has revolutionized gaming but its future remains uncertain. Let’s take a look at potential roadblocks and see how the console is likely to perform against them in the next year or so.

Ironically, the biggest Xbox 36 competition may be from its own company. The originally planned replacement for the current Xbox generation, the Xbox 720, was due out 2011. So is Microsoft going to swap out for a newer model, rendering your beloved Xbox 360 useless and forcing you to buy a more expensive product? That was originally the plan! But it’s not likely, if far from impossible, in the current market.

Why?

Well, all three major companies - Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo - are acutely aware of the painful economic situation. This doesn’t necessarily translate into bad game sales, since the unemployed and underemployed have plenty of free time. However, it DOES translate into a bad time to unleash a brand ******** new, high-priced console. Furthermore, each company has other reasons for wanting to stick with the current console generation.

The Wii is built off of avoiding console power comparisons, the Xbox has a well-developed online player system, and the PS3 has had a recent price reduction along with its Blu-ray feature. All these profitable scenarios are simply annihilated by whoever jumps the gun and starts on the next gen early. Nothing’s certain, but if you had to bet on it, bet on not seeing the current generation of consoles stretch out for a few more years.

What about peripheral support? Will the Xbox’s hyped Kinect actually develop a decent library? The answer appears to be ‘yes,’ albeit that positive somewhat hinges on what genres you prefer. Most of its library is anticipated to launch next year, with highly-anticipated broad-appeal games like a SpongeBob Squarepants spinoff and Michael Jackson: the Experience included. If you bought the Kinect, your dollars won’t have gone to waste.

Those uninterested in motion gaming will still find 2011 an interesting year for the Xbox. The library will be swelled by such titles as the third Gears of War, Codename Kingdoms, XCom, and Steel Battallion. Action and strategy gamers are likely to be pleased by this focus.

Codename Kingdoms is perhaps the most relevant of the newbie titles, since it’s an Xbox exclusive based on the relatively untapped historical gladiator action subgenre. Just don’t expect Crytek to stay loyal to the Xbox in particular - their official stance is a very mercenary one of developing for whatever console is most convenient at the time!

2011 appears to be another strong Xbox year. Time will tell if the competitors can take the heat.
