While gamers are already starting to look to the ‘next gen’ of gaming – and proper virtual 3D gaming and TV being one of THE hot topics at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas – Microsoft has taken the opportunity to say it is NOT working on the next Xbox right now, but is concentrating on improving the Xbox 360 experience.
Microsoft boss Robbie Bach, the company’s President of Entertainment and Devices, told the San Jose Mercury News: “Just coming up with something that’s faster and prettier isn’t going to be sufficient.”
“The life cycle for this generation of consoles - and I’m not just talking about Xbox, I’d include Wii and PS3 as well - is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations,” Bach added.
Credit crunch stifling
The Microsoft man also made the connection with the credit crunch, noting that consumers are going to be reticent to make large investments in new hardware for the foreseeable future.
“When you look at consumers, they are going to be more value-conscious,” he said Bach.
Sony is sticking to its guns, re-iterating at every given PR opportunity the ‘ten year life-cycle’ line when promoting its PlayStation 3 console.
All microsoft is trying to say is that the xbox 360 will last longer than the xbox, the 720 won’t be out until 2012.

This generation supposedly JUST starting to be a problem because the xbox 360 has just a dvd drive. What will they do when they need more space for the games, will it come with 2 or 3 dvd’s because sony obviously isn’t going to let them have bluray in the xbox 720(?). I think thats how it works right, sony owns the rights for bluray and they get to decide who uses it and who doesn’t correct me if i’m wrong. I have a ps3 but i don’t know what will happen the the next xbox or even the xbox 360 without blu ray! I’m not being a fanboy either cause I honestly respect both sony and microsoft’s consoles but i’m just wondering you know what i mean!

I am thinking of getting one for Christmas but the red lights scare me from buying it. Will the xbox 360 live for at least 2 years. Or will it just die. What is the failure rate because i heard that it is around 10% but that was about 1-2 months ago.

I personally think XBOX 720 sounds cool but I originally wanted them to call the XBOX 360 the XBOX 2, and then the 3rd Xbox call it Xbox 360 but who cares.
